Day 16

30 Days to Stop the Pipeline

Call Governor Cuomo at 518-474-8390

Day 16

Since today’s topic is about protecting New York’s water, be sure to call and/or email DEC Commissioner Joseph Martens (518-402-8545joe.martens@dec.ny.gov), as well as Governor Cuomo (518-474-8390; gov.cuomo@chamber.state.ny.us).

Today’s Topic: The “Constitution” Pipeline Company would spray its entire 100-mile-long, 50-foot-wide path with harmful herbicides.

Suggested Talking Points:

  • This pipeline’s massive 760-acre right-of-way would cut through a pristine part of central New York and the northwest Catskills. To keep the right-of-way open and clear of vegetation, the pipeline company would apply substantial amounts herbicides.
  • The Constitution Pipeline Company has indicated that glyphosate (Roundup) is one of the herbicides it would likely use.
  • It was recently revealed that, for nearly 20 years, scientists have been documenting the many health consequences attributed to exposure to glyphosate (Roundup).
  • These health consequences include increased risk of cancer, miscarriages, attention deficit disorder and reproductive problems, in addition to symptoms such as eye irritation, rashes, nausea, sore throat, difficulty breathing, headache, lethargy, nosebleeds and dizziness.
  • Much of the proposed pipeline route is close to homes, water wells, streams and ponds. Its gigantic right-of-way would cross more than 275 New York water bodies.
  • I’m calling on the governor and DEC Commissioner Martens to stop this pipeline. The safety of central New York’s water and the health of its citizens should not be sacrificed to transport fracked gas from Pennsylvania to Canada for export.

Each weekday, from now until May 11th, Stop the Pipeline will focus on a different reason why the Constitution Pipeline would be harmful to New York’s land, water, air and people.

YOUR phone calls are what helped us win a ban on fracking in New York. YOUR phone calls will help us stop the Constitution Pipeline, too.

A Quick Snapshot

This 30-inch-diameter, 124-mile-long high-pressure pipeline would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania, through the forests, farms, fields and front yards of New York residents, and on to Canada for export.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) can stop this Un-Constitutional Pipeline by DENYING the necessary permits.

How can you help?

Use the talking points in this email to tell Governor Cuomo and others why this project should be stopped.
