Day 17

30 Days to Stop the Pipeline

Call Governor Cuomo at 518-474-8390

Day 17

It’s EARTH DAY! Call or email Governor Cuomo today to wish him a Happy Earth Day. While you’re at it, remind him that fracked gas is just another fossil fuel—in fact, it’s more polluting in the long term than coal or oil. Far from an energy solution, fracked gas and its attendant pipelines and compressor stations will propel us faster toward dangerous climate instability.

Today’s Topic: Fracked-gas infrastructure such the proposed “Constitution” Pipeline serve to accelerate climate change.

Suggested Talking Points:

  • Governor Cuomo and acting New York Health Commissioner Howard Zucker have stated that the process of hydraulic fracturing (aka fracking) likely poses grave threats to water, air and human health.
  • Replacing coal and oil with fracked “natural” gas is a dangerous and foolish plan. Fracked gas is accelerating climate change because of the vast quantities of methane released during its extraction, transport, compression and combustion.
  • Yes, methane is copiously leaked during the entire fracking process, from extraction to end use. Compressor stations emit huge amounts of methane during intentional, frequent “blowdowns.” Methane also escapes unintentionally through leaky valves and gaskets and pipeline ruptures. (Two fracking-related pipelines ruptured in West Virginia earlier this month.)
  • Over a 25-year time span, methane is 70-86 times more potent a contributor to greenhouse gas levels than carbon dioxide.
  • I’m calling to urge the governor to listen to the science and reject the spread of fracking infrastructure in New York. Begin by STOPPING the Constitution Pipeline.

Call today, call tomorrow!

Each weekday, from now until May 11th, Stop the Pipeline will focus on a different reason why the Constitution Pipeline would be harmful to New York’s land, water, air and people.

YOUR phone calls are what helped us win a ban on fracking in New York. YOUR phone calls will help us stop the Constitution Pipeline, too.

A Quick Snapshot

This 30-inch-diameter, 124-mile-long high-pressure pipeline would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania, through the forests, farms, fields and front yards of New York residents, and on to Canada for export.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) can stop this Un-Constitutional Pipeline by DENYING the necessary permits.

How can you help?

Use the talking points in this email to tell Governor Cuomo and others why this project should be stopped.

Feel free to elaborate on how the pipeline would adversely affect you, your home, business, family, friends and neighbors.
