Day 23

30 Days to Stop the Pipeline

Day 23

NEWS ALERT:

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced a new 15-day public comment period on the re-submitted Water Quality Certificate application for the proposed, federally regulated Constitution Pipeline.

Commenting is open again until May 14th, 2015.

Today’s Topic: Allowing the “Constitution” Pipeline to be built would contradict the mission statement of the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Suggested Talking Points:

  • The Constitution Pipeline requires permits from the NYSDEC in order to be built.
  • The DEC’s mission statement reads as follows:  To conserve, improve and protect New York’s natural resources and environment and to prevent, abate and control water, land and air pollution, in order to enhance the health, safety and welfare of the people of the state and their overall economic and social well-being.
  • Further, the DEC states that its goal is “to achieve this mission through the simultaneous pursuit of environmental quality, public health, economic prosperity and social well-being, including environmental justice and the empowerment of individuals to participate in environmental decisions that affect their lives.”
  • The Constitution Pipeline would harm New York’s natural resources and environment by clear-cutting 1,000 acres of forestland, trenching across more than 270 water bodies, and digging and blasting through 100 miles of hilly, flood-prone, rural land and many farms.
  • The Constitution Pipeline would cause long-term permanent degradation of DEC-protected streams by increasing runoff and sedimentation—both during and after construction—due to digging, blasting and the permanent deforestation of the pipeline’s entire route
  • The Constitution Pipeline and the multiple compressor stations along its length would increase air pollution via toxic emissions. All gas pipelines leak methane (a greenhouse gas) sooner or later.
  • The Constitution Pipeline would be a detriment and danger to the health, safety, property, air and water of all New York citizens along its path, as well as downstream.
  • I’m calling on the DEC to uphold its mission statement. Deny the permits for this fracked-gas pipeline.

Each weekday, from now until May 11th, Stop the Pipeline will focus on a different reason why the Constitution Pipeline would be harmful to New York’s land, water, air and people.

YOUR phone calls are what helped us win a ban on fracking in New York. YOUR phone calls will help us stop the Constitution Pipeline, too.

A Quick Snapshot

This 30-inch-diameter, 124-mile-long high-pressure pipeline would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania, through the forests, farms, fields and front yards of New York residents, and on to Canada for export.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) can stop this Un-Constitutional Pipeline by DENYING the necessary permits.
