Day 27

30 Days to Stop the Pipeline

Day 27

Today’s Topic: It would be reckless to run the massive “Constitution” Pipeline through New York’s fragile karst topography.

Suggested Talking Points:

  • Karst topography is shaped over time by the action of water on soluble rock like limestone and gypsum. This unstable landscape is underlain by caves, sinkholes and fissured rock, which create a network of underground pathways.
  • Though rare in New York State, karst is found throughout Schoharie County, underlying the route of the proposed 30-inch-diameter Constitution Pipeline.
  • Because of the porous nature of karst terrain, surface water can be quickly diverted into its underground routes. These pathways can transport pollutants very rapidly.
  • Bulldozing, excavating and potentially blasting through this landscape to install a high-pressure fracked-gas pipeline would put New York water and anyone who lives near the pipeline at risk.
  • The sinkholes and caverns can collapse, placing abnormal loads on a pipeline, most of which are not engineered to withstand impacts of this magnitude.
  • In karst terrain, pipelines can end up resting on underground rock pinnacles. These create stress points on pipes, which can eventually corrode, leak, rupture and explode.
  • Karst’s natural conduits provide routes for both liquids and gases to move freely. In the event of a leak or rupture, methane and hydrocarbons could migrate and become trapped in a pocket of rock or cave, posing an explosion risk.
  • Once released, contaminants drain through thin soil directly into fissured limestone. Locations a mile or more from a leak site could be affected before a leak is identified. These contaminants cannot be remediated.
  • Constitution’s Karst Mitigation Plan is insufficient to address these concerns. I’m calling on the governor and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to protect New Yorkers and their water. Deny the 401 water quality permits for the Constitution Pipeline.

Each weekday, from now until May 11th, Stop the Pipeline will focus on a different reason why the Constitution Pipeline would be harmful to New York’s land, water, air and people.

YOUR phone calls are what helped us win a ban on fracking in New York. YOUR phone calls will help us stop the Constitution Pipeline, too.

A Quick Snapshot

This 30-inch-diameter, 124-mile-long high-pressure pipeline would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania, through the forests, farms, fields and front yards of New York residents, and on to Canada for export.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) can stop this Un-Constitutional Pipeline by DENYING the necessary permits.

How can you help?

Use the talking points in this email to tell Governor Cuomo and others why this project should be stopped.

Feel free to elaborate on how the pipeline would adversely affect you, your home, business, family, friends and neighbors.
