As the proposed Constitution Pipeline (CP) enters its third year of delays and opposition, a SECOND high-pressure transmission line was proposed in late May along nearly the same route as CP.
What is it and who’s behind it? The Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company (TGP) is proposing a 296-mile-long pipeline called the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Northeast Energy Direct Project (NED).TGP is owned by Kinder Morgan, the third largest energy company in North America.
In early June, the US Court of Appeals ruled that segmentation of pipeline projects is unlawful. One way that pipeline companies attempt to make massive and far-reaching pipeline projects appear less disruptive is by presenting them to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in several small “segments,” claiming that these segments are unrelated to one another.
MORE GOOD NEWS: THE EPA CALLS OUT FERC
The EPA sent a great letter to FERC on June 10 pointing out that FERC had not followed proper procedure by omitting the Migratory Bird and Upland Forest Plan from the dEIS (draft Environmental Impact Statement). As such, says the EPA, the plan “did not receive thorough public and agency review and comment.” EPA requests that FERC reissue the dEIS.
