Day 2

30 Days to Stop the Pipeline: A phone call a day keeps the Constitution Pipeline away

Since today is opening day of trout-fishing season in New York, we are calling Governor Cuomo and DEC Commissioner Joseph Martens, whose agency has a long history of protecting our state fish, the brook trout.

Call Commissioner Martens at 518-402-8545.

Topic: The Constitution Pipeline could be devastating to New York’s famed trout-fishing industry.

Suggested Talking Points:

  • These sensitive, prized fish require cold, clear water in order to survive and thrive.
  • If the DEC approves permits for the massive fracked-gas-carrying “Constitution” Pipeline, it will mean digging and blasting across hundreds of sensitive waterways, including DEC-protected trout streams.  Waters would be muddied.  Muddy waters kill trout.
  • Construction of this pipeline would also mean the permanent removal of 100-foot-wide swaths of vegetation and tree canopies along 45 DEC-protected trout streams that the pipeline would cross 84 different times.
  • Removal of shade canopy warms streams. Removal of approximately 1,000 acres of forestland surrounding these streams will increase erosion and runoff and create muddy waters.
  • It’s the DEC’s mandate to aid in the protection, not the destruction of trout habitat. As such, Commissioner Martens and the DEC must deny the permits for the “Constitution” Pipeline.

YOUR phone calls are what helped us win a ban on fracking in New York. YOUR phone calls will help us stop the Constitution Pipeline, too.

A Quick Snapshot

This 30-inch-diameter, 124-mile-long high-pressure pipeline would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania, through the forests, farms, fields and front yards of New York residents, and on to Canada for export.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) can stop this Un-Constitutional Pipeline by DENYING the necessary permits.

How can you help?

Use the talking points in this email to tell Governor Cuomo and others why this project should be stopped.

Feel free to elaborate on how the pipeline would adversely affect you, your home, business, family, friends and neighbors.
