Day 13

30 Days to Stop the Pipeline

Call Governor Cuomo at 518-474-8390

Day 13

Call or email NYDEC Commissioner Joseph Martens with today’s message, as well. (518-402-8545; joe.martens@dec.ny.gov) His office—the Department of Environmental Conservation—is mandated to protect our water.

Today’s Topic: The massive, high-pressure “Constitution” Pipeline would be extremely vulnerable to rupture during storms and floods.

Suggested Talking Points:

  • The proposed Constitution Pipeline is slated to cross more than 275 streams, creeks, rivers and other water bodies in central New York and the northwest Catskills.
  • This part of New York is known for its frequent and severe rain and flooding. Area towns have suffered three 100-year floods in the past eight years.
  • During rainstorms and floods, the greater-than-normal weight and speed of water can scrape or “scour” dozens of feet of soil and gravel off a streambed, potentially exposing buried pipelines and leading to their rupture.
  • Last week (on April 9, 2015), heavy rains destabilized the soil around two gas pipelines at stream crossings in West Virginia, causing the pipes to rupture.
  • Days after the ruptures, pipeline officials in West Virginia said they were still unable to say how much fracked gas and “condensate” had leaked from their lines, stating they found it difficult to investigate because of high, swift water conditions.
  • Burying a 30-inch-diameter fracked-gas pipeline such as the “Constitution” across hundreds of New York waterways that are frequently inundated with high, swift-moving water would be foolish.
  • It would put at risk not only our water quality but the lives of all who live near the proposed route. I’m calling on the governor to STOP this dangerous project.

Each weekday, from now until May 11th, Stop the Pipeline will focus on a different reason why the Constitution Pipeline would be harmful to New York’s land, water, air and people.

YOUR phone calls are what helped us win a ban on fracking in New York. YOUR phone calls will help us stop the Constitution Pipeline, too.

A Quick Snapshot

This 30-inch-diameter, 124-mile-long high-pressure pipeline would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania, through the forests, farms, fields and front yards of New York residents, and on to Canada for export.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) can stop this Un-Constitutional Pipeline by DENYING the necessary permits.

How can you help?

Use the talking points in this email to tell Governor Cuomo and others why this project should be stopped.

Feel free to elaborate on how the pipeline would adversely affect you, your home, business, family, friends and neighbors.
