Day 18

30 Days to Stop the Pipeline

Call Governor Cuomo at 518-474-8390

Day 18

Compressor stations (which accompany all pressurized pipelines) emit a frightening amount of toxic gases. Check out today’s talking points to learn a little more about this. Then contact DEC Commissioner Martens (518-402-8545; joe.martens@dec.ny.gov), Health Commissioner Zucker (518-474-2011; dohweb@health.ny.gov, subject line: To the Attention of Dr. Zucker) AND Governor Cuomo (518-474-8390; gov.cuomo@chamber.state.ny.us). Tell them to STOP the “Constitution” Pipeline and its polluting compressor stations.

Today’s Topic: The “Constitution” Pipeline would require at least one compressor station along its proposed route through the northwest Catskills and central New York. Over time even more compressor stations would be added.

Suggested Talking Points:

  • Compressor stations are necessary to move gas through high-pressure lines. They expel toxic gases, particulate matter and other harmful residues. These are industrial facilities that pollute on a massive scale.
  • In addition to large amounts of methane, compressor stations emit carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, sulfur oxides and nitrous oxides.
  • People who live near compressor stations often suffer from nose bleeds, sore throats, rashes, headaches, dizziness and nausea.
  • Even more scary: Compressor stations release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fracking chemicals. These include known carcinogens, neurotoxins and endocrine disruptors.
  • The combined effects of persistent exposure to these VOCs and other chemicals—resulting in increased toxicity in humans—have not been studied or addressed by the gas industry or the federal government.
  • Even more incredible: The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) relies on self-reporting by the gas industry regarding these emissions.
  • This is unacceptable. I’m calling on the governor, acting Health Commissioner Zucker and DEC Commissioner Martens to protect the people of New York and the air they must breathe. Stop this pipeline and its toxic, polluting compressor stations.

Each weekday, from now until May 11th, Stop the Pipeline will focus on a different reason why the Constitution Pipeline would be harmful to New York’s land, water, air and people.

YOUR phone calls are what helped us win a ban on fracking in New York. YOUR phone calls will help us stop the Constitution Pipeline, too.

A Quick Snapshot

This 30-inch-diameter, 124-mile-long high-pressure pipeline would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania, through the forests, farms, fields and front yards of New York residents, and on to Canada for export.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) can stop this Un-Constitutional Pipeline by DENYING the necessary permits.

How can you help?

Use the talking points in this email to tell Governor Cuomo and others why this project should be stopped.

Feel free to elaborate on how the pipeline would adversely affect you, your home, business, family, friends and neighbors.
